Manchester City Council - District Centre Study 2009
Resident Perceptions - Summary of Key Findings

Kwest Research was commissioned by Manchester City Council (MCC) in 2009 to carry out a survey to examine resident perceptions of shopping areas in Manchester. MCC specified 17 Primary District Centres across the city.

The main aims of the research can be summarised as follows:

• To establish patterns of use of Primary District Centres;
• To gather residents’ views about the facilities and services available in Primary District Centres;
• To capture residents’ perceptions about the sense of community in Primary District Centres;
• To investigate areas for improvements in Primary District Centres.

The survey was conducted using a telephone interview methodology. Through a series of questions, respondents were asked to identify the principal area they use for shops, services and facilities. In total, 3,052 interviews were achieved, enabling confidence in the accuracy of data.

In addition to the 17 Primary District Centres, MCC also undertook separate analysis of the City Centre.

There are three published reports, which outline the findings:

• Nine in ten residents (91%) say that people mix and get on well in the Primary District Centre they use;
• Half of residents (49%) say that the Primary District Centre they use is getting better, compared to a fifth (20%) who say that it is getting worse;
• Two-thirds of residents (64%) say that the Primary District Centre they use is either excellent or good. Three in ten (29%) rate it as fair and 8% rate the Primary District Centre they use as poor or terrible.

The findings are available online, via the " online analyst", and direct access can be arranged by contacting Su Goldthorpe su.goldthorpe@manchester.gov.uk, or Brian Kelly brian.kelly@manchester.gov.uk
